Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Do you feel stuck in patterns that keep repeating no matter what you try? Psychodynamic psychotherapy helps you look beyond surface symptoms to uncover the unconscious beliefs and past experiences holding you back. With that insight, you’ll learn to break the cycle and move forward with clarity and confidence.
What Is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
“Psychodynamic psychotherapy” may sound clinical, but at its core, it’s really about self-understanding.
We all have a conscious mind—what we actively think and feel. But we also have an unconscious mind, which quietly shapes our emotions, behaviors, and beliefs, often without us even realizing it.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that draws out those unconscious patterns.
Together, we’ll explore how those past experiences or deeply held beliefs contribute to your current challenges. And once we identify the beliefs no longer serving you, we’ll replace them with more accurate and compassionate views about yourself, the people you love, and the world around you.
To be clear, psychodynamic psychotherapy isn’t just about managing symptoms. It’s about helping you address the core issues behind those symptoms. This is deep work, but it is well worth the effort.
Many of my patients report feeling a deeper sense of calm, confidence, and comfort in daily life. Why? Because we’re not just masking symptoms—we’re reshaping them for lasting change.
What to Expect From Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Knowing what to expect from your care plan doesn’t just ease uncertainty—it builds trust. While every patient is unique, this is how I generally approach psychodynamic psychotherapy:
Understanding Your History
Often, gaining clarity about the present requires looking back. We’ll explore your family dynamics and formative experiences to better understand the roots of your current challenges.
Exploring Relationship Patterns
Our past shapes how we connect with others. We’ll look at how your early experiences shape the way you navigate relationships, romantic partnerships, and other key relationships. Then, we’ll assess whether those patterns serve you or create friction.
Finding Productive Coping Strategies
We’ll also look at how you handle stress and conflict. When it’s helpful, we’ll identify healthier coping tools that support you in staying engaged with life instead of avoiding what feels difficult.
Developing a Healthier Sense of Self
Once we understand the why behind your behaviors and beliefs, we can begin reshaping the patterns that no longer serve you. The goal isn’t just symptom relief—it’s helping you build a more grounded, resilient sense of self, rooted in insight, self-compassion, and lasting change.
Is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Right For You?
Many of my patients are new to this type of therapy and wonder if it’s the right fit. If any of the following experiences sound familiar, I encourage you to reach out:
- You keep falling into the same patterns—emotionally, relationally, or behaviorally—and don’t fully understand why.
- You suspect your early relationships may be influencing how you show up today, but haven’t had space to explore it.
- You use coping strategies that feel necessary but aren’t really helping—like shutting down, lashing out, or numbing out.
- You’ve tried surface-level treatments and want to go deeper.
- You’re not just looking to manage symptoms—you want to understand and change the root dynamics underneath them.
How Psychodynamic Therapy Can Transform You
If you’ve tried other treatments but still feel like something’s missing, psychodynamic psychotherapy can help you move beyond surface-level fixes and feel more grounded, less reactive, and more at ease.
Through this work, you may gain:
- A stronger sense of who you are and where you fit in the world
- Greater emotional ease
- Healthier boundaries that lead to more connected relationships
- Less anxiety and depression
- A broader, more flexible range of coping tools
- A deeper relationship with yourself and others
- A sense of true understanding—something many of my patients describe as incredibly freeing
My Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Philosophy
It’s not common for psychiatrists to also provide psychotherapy. But for me, it’s a key part of how I practice. Even when I’m not the primary therapist, I bring psychodynamic thinking into every aspect of our work.
This approach helps create deeper, more meaningful care. And because I also offer medication management and holistic support, many patients find it helpful to work with one provider who sees the full picture and can guide the process with clarity.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready for a deeper understanding of your mental health challenges, let’s talk. Together, we’ll clarify what’s going on and what comes next.

Meet Dr. Todd Young
I founded my practice because I saw a need for a different kind of psychiatry—one that honors complexity, invites curiosity, and blends science with genuine care and connection.
When you partner with me, you can expect custom care plans that empower you to take control and become the fullest version of yourself that you can be.

Insurance Information
My private practice operates outside insurance networks, allowing for longer appointments and highly individualized care.
For patients with PPO insurance, partial reimbursement is often possible. I also provide superbills (itemized receipts) that can be submitted for out-of-network reimbursement.
If you have questions about coverage or reimbursement, I’m happy to walk you through the process.

Visit Me in Del Mar
My office is located inside the Hacienda Del Mar, a serene, Spanish-style courtyard building in Del Mar. It’s not just a place for appointments—it’s a safe and inviting space where patients feel at ease the moment they arrive. You’ll love the courtyard, the soft ocean air, and a live projected wildlife feed that quietly reminds us all to stay resilient and mindful, no matter what comes our way.
